Ficus brandegeei is a “rock strangling fig” caudex forming species native to Baja California and Central America- growing alongside ficus petiolaris and ficus palmeri. The caudex is massive naturally on this species and highly conducive to bonsai forms. These are well developed seed grown plants in 1 gallon pots.

I found that San Marco growers had provided one of the best summaries of taxonomical provenance and I will cite them here:

”This species name was originally proposed as Ficus brandegei (ending with a single "e" before the "I") by Paul Carpenter Standley in "The Mexican and Central American Species of Ficus" published by the U.S. National Herbarium in 1917 based on the type in the herbarium of the University of California (no 142205) that was collected at San José del Cabo, Lower California, Mexico September 15 1899 by Townshend Stith Brandegee (1843-1925) who also previously collected the plant at the same location in 1890. Brandegee (whose first name is sometimes spelled Townsend but is usually referred to just as T.S.) was a 19th century botanist who explored and botanized Mexico and the south western US, including our own Santa Barbara Channel Islands. More recent treatment of this plant by Dr. Cornelis C. Berg of the Norwegian Arboretum, the author of the section on Moraceae in "The Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants: Dicotyledons" edited by Urs Eggli and published in 2002, includes Ficus brandegei and F. palmeri with the central Mexican species Ficus petiolaris, noting that the presence or absence of hairs on various plant parts was not a viable characteristic to distinguish the plants as this variability was common throughout the genus Ficus.”

Dormancy:

This plant is winter deciduous. If you purchase this plant in the late fall/winter/early spring, it will not have leaves. As it starts to warm up, you can water more frequently to encourage it to start growing new leaves.

Even during spring/summer/early fall, this plant may still drop leaves in transit. This is normal and expected. When plants are put in a stressful situation, which includes being bare rooted and put in a dark box for a few days, it is going to conserve as much energy as it can. It does this by dropping its leaves. Once it arrives, please pot it up, give it a good drink, and keep it in a shady area for about a week while it starts to recover. You should see new leaf growth within 1-2 weeks. If you have any questions about this plant’s care please reach out to us at the website chat, Facebook, Instagram, or support@paradisefoundnursery.com.

Additional shipping information:

Large plants may require additional shipping charges. Shopify does not have a way for us to assign a certain sized box to certain products. Instead it works off of a "default" box. Our default is an average of our commonly used box sizes and may not calculate accurate rates for larger plants. Please be advised that if shipping will cost us considerably more than you paid, we will send you an invoice and will not ship your plant until the additional cost is paid. We don't mind a few dollars here and there, but previously we have covered shipping costs well over $100 when $20-30 was paid by the customer. Please reach out with any questions.

Additionally, trees may be pruned heavily at our discretion before shipping to help us reduce shipping rates.

Grower's Choice:

Photos in the listings unless otherwise specified are representative of the plant that will be sent to you. Each plant may vary slightly in shape, size, growth pattern, etc. as they are all individuals like you and me! As always if you receive a plant that you are dissatisfied with please reach out to us within 7 days of receipt at support@paradisefoundnursery.com.

All plants are hand selected by our team, we pick out the biggest and best in stock! Smaller plants like seedlings may be shipped in pot at our discretion

We ship all orders Mon-Wed excluding federal holidays. If temperatures near you are below 45℉ we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order. If temperatures will be much lower than 20℉ please leave us a note with your order asking us to hold your order until a given date as heat packs will fail at temps much lower than 20℉.

If you’re local to Sarasota, FL you may select local pickup at checkout instead of shipping. Please leave a note with your order of when you would like to pick up your order.

Any other questions please reach out to us at support@paradisefoundnursery.com or the website’s chat function!
